The story takes place in an Italian town and at an undetermined time (probably the 18th century) and is about a mans deadly revenge against one of his friends who insulted him.Summary: Montresor tells the story of the night where he took revenge for an insult uttered towards him by Fortunato, a nobleman of his acquaintance.
Meeting Fortunato during Carnival while the man is drunk and wearing a jesters cap, Montresor lures him into a trap by claiming to have received a barrel of amontillado and asking for his expert opinion to ascertain its origin.The Montresor family motto is: nemo me impune lacessit.Together, they go into the vast cellars of Montresors palace and finally arrive in a niche where Montresor promptly chains Fortunato.
He then takes out some masons tools and begins to wall Fortunato inside.
Immediately sobered, the latter tries in vain to free himself from his chains, to the great pleasure of Montresor.
Fortunato then screams for help but Montresor knows perfectly well that no one will hear him.
As Montresor is about to finish the wall, Fortunato claims it was a good joke before imploring "For Gods sake, Montresor!" ", to which his murderer replies "Yes, for Gods sake" before dropping his torch into the thin remaining opening...
